Miles of History

Railway 200 Active Challenge

27th September - 25th October 2025

As part of the official Railway 200 celebrations, we invited the whole rail industry to take part in a national movement to unite teams through physical movement.

Teams of six were challenged to virtually cover 200 miles from Thurso to London Bridge, passing through Shildon and Cardiff, uniting the whole of the UK Rail Industry whilst celebrating this historic 200-year milestone. Physical activity powered the teams' journey on a live interactive map, competing to reach the capital first and raising funds for Railway 200 charities along the way.

Interactive Map

  • The power of movement

Hear from Zoe Flannagan, Health & Wellbeing at Avanti West Coast, who is passionate about movement and bringing the railway family together.

“The Railway Active Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for colleagues across the rail industry to come together in a fun, inclusive, and meaningful way. It's more than just a fitness challenge – it's a chance to support our physical and mental wellbeing, strengthen team connections, and celebrate the proud history and future of rail through Railway 200. I'd encourage every team to get involved, get moving, and be part of something that brings us all together.”

Sinead Kennedy, Head of Occupational Health and Wellbeing, Network Rail Southern
