How do you like to keep active? What activities do you enjoy the most?
Walking is the one activity I do the most, my partner and I look after a few friends dogs when they are taking weekends away or go on holiday, so there is nothing better than taking the four legged friend for a nice 2 hour walk. Gardening is another, I know it's not a sport of any kind, but I got an allotment last summer which had been left to go wild for a couple of years. Trying to get the weeds under control and getting it ready for planting this year was certainly a workout! I also do a bit of H.I.T. and Yoga.
Why do you feel it is important to lead a physically active lifestyle?
In my current role I spend most of my working day sat behind the ticket office window selling tickets. With driving to and from work and then sitting in front of the telly, it's all too easy to do nothing active. Now in my 50’s I'm feeling the effects of getting older, aching joints and extra pounds on the waistline, so keeping active keeps things moving, helps keep the weight down and getting me out walking in the fresh air helps clear my head, great for my mental health as well.
How does the Active Hub platform support your physical movement?
I love the monthly challenges, if it's 30 minutes daily activity to do or having a goal of 100km to hit by the end of the month, gives me that little nudge to get up, get out and do something.
How has participating in team events helped increase your engagement with other colleagues?
When we have done a team activity like the “Waterloo to Weymouth” walking challenge it really helped us all encouraging each other to get up and walk. We had a whatsapp group so we could tell each other what we were doing, plus the maps were great to see where people had walked.
Has having the Active Hub in place via your employer enabled you to lead a more active lifestyle?
I do try and keep active but the Active Hub has reminded me to get up and get moving every day.
What is your current active goal?
I'm getting married in October so want to look and feel the best I can for the big day. As well as doing the challenge every month (I like to see how high up the leader board I can get). I've just set myself a plank challenge, trying to do an extra 5 seconds to my plank every couple of days. At the moment I'm up to 2 minute 40 seconds, my target is a 5 minute plank!
The Active Hub has been great to keep me motivated, to get up and out. I also love a bit of competition, especially when there is sometimes a voucher to win!
