How do you like to keep active? What activities do you enjoy the most?
I am a keen practitioner of many different types of activity (hopeless at them all but try out a variety of activities each week). I trial run woods (running several races across the country), play touch rugby and boulder regularly, but my all-time favourite is to use my beloved equipment in my garden doing functional circuits.
Why do you feel it is important to lead a physically active lifestyle?
Being active is paramount to me and my life. Having survived cancer twice and historically suffered from a back injury, I have learnt how important it is to move and be active to keep me functioning and the best version of myself that I can be to help to inspire others to follow suit to preserve wellbeing and hopefully get my lad into sport. Simply put in prioritizing my health, I can prioritize everything else.
How does the Active Hub platform support your physical movement?
It has benefited me in promoting the team and encouraging others to participate beyond my own function. I have been promoting within my team meetings to get others to join in the fun.
How has participating in the challenges helped increase your engagement with other colleagues?
It allowed me a platform to extend my established office run club to become more inclusive and organize an office walk which I did as a guided tour on the history of the local and surrounding area. I did all my research and to my surprise 45 people attended both sessions. I saw an opportunity to make it a regular activity in which to offer to the office and compliment the Run Club for those that weren’t comfortable in running.
Has having the Active Hub in place via your employer enabled you to lead a more active lifestyle?
Whilst it hasn’t made me any more active than I am currently, it did allow a fantastic opportunity for camaraderie amongst the wider organization whilst adding a healthy competitive element which was certainly fun and brilliant to encourage people to get more active.
What is your current active goal?
Continue upon what I have accomplished now by being in the best shape of my life (in my forties) and reap the benefits for introducing my son into sports and the lessons that sports positively promotes amongst children growing up (who knows, he may end up competing for Team GB).
Two-time cancer survivor who uses his experiences to positively promote awareness of cancer whilst teaching others of the importance of wellbeing and embracing physical activity. I used my recovery to build awareness and say thank you by fundraising for the wonderful hospital and charity that continues to save countless lives.
